Vermilion Cliffs Hiking Guide

The Vermilion Cliffs rise along the Utah-Arizona border north of Page and Marble Canyon. The 112,500-acre Vermilion Cliffs National Monument protects some of the most striking sandstone formations in North America, including The Wave and the world’s longest slot canyon at Buckskin Gulch.

Most trails here require a BLM permit. The Wave requires either a day-use permit ($6/person) or an overnight permit ($5/person/night), both obtained through a lottery at recreation.gov. Daily limits are strict: 64 day-use permits total, allocated through a four-month-advance lottery and a smaller walk-up lottery the day before.

Best season is spring and fall. Summer heat reaches 110°F. Winter brings snow and ice. Flash floods are a serious risk in the slot canyons during and after storms.
