Havasupai Permit Status Guide 2026: What Is Open Right Now
How to verify current Havasupai permit and reopening status using official tribal sources, and avoid outdated social-media trip planning.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and more than a mile deep. Most visitors see the South Rim, which is open year-round. The North Rim is open mid-May through mid-November.
Day hiking into the canyon is possible without a permit. Overnight trips below the rim require a backcountry permit from the NPS Backcountry Information Center ($10 application fee plus $15 per person per night). Permits are competitive. Apply four months in advance.
The inner canyon reaches temperatures above 110°F in summer. The NPS issues heat warnings and has closed some trails during extreme heat events. Spring and fall are the best seasons for canyon hiking.
Havasupai Falls is on Havasupai tribal land adjacent to the park, not within Grand Canyon National Park. It requires a separate tribal permit and operates under its own rules.
